4 Different Coping Skills To Try Today

There are many different types of coping skills. Some coping skills are healthier than others. When faced with stress, we don’t always know how we’ll react. This is why it’s important to have a toolkit full of coping skills that you can fall back on when you’re dealing with tough times. An important thing to remember is that you must practice these coping skills even when you are not in a stressful moment. By practicing when you aren’t stressed, this gives you the ability to practice a comfortable thing when you are overwhelmed. Villa Tranquil Recovery is here to provide you with a few different coping skills you can practice in preparation for stressful moments.

  • Self-soothing

When practicing self-soothing techniques, you are connecting with your senses. The possibilities are unlimited when it comes to self-soothing coping skills. Try baking your favorite sweet-treat to activate your sense of smell and taste. You can watch your favorite television show to activate your sense of sight. Playing with a pet is a way to enable your sense of touch. Lastly, listening to uplifting music can boost your mood via your sense of sound.

  • Distraction

If you’re struggling with an addiction, staying away from alcohol or drugs can be a difficult task when you’re in the midst of an emotional time. Using the distraction coping skill, you are trying to take your mind off of your craving. Some things to distract yourself with can be different forms of entertainment or expression. Watch a movie, listen to music, read, draw, paint, or write. Find what you love and let yourself get lost in it. This can help you cope with some troublesome times.

  • Emotional awareness

Instead of falling back on alcohol or drugs to numb how you’re feeling, you should practice expressing your emotions in a healthy way. You don’t want to numb your feelings or push them under the rug. You want to be aware of what you’re feeling and how you’re doing. Try to write down how you’re feeling or draw a picture that describes your emotions. Anything that allows you to be aware and accept your emotions is a step in the right direction.

  • Opposite action

During opposite action, you are going to participate in an activity that is the complete opposite of what you feel like doing. This is going to take a big push to do. Instead of using to push down your feelings, you should validate and express your feelings by writing them down or finding motivational quotes to put around your room. Although it may seem silly, opposite action techniques are proven to help people cope.
