5 Small Things You Can Do That Will Make A Huge Difference

Self-care is a necessary part of recovery from a mental illness. Here are some things you can do to prioritize self-care and keep yourself on your recovery journey.

1. Honor your voice

Speak up for yourself and your needs, not only with others but with yourself. Treat yourself with the utmost respect — you deserve it even though it may not seem like it. Kindness and compassion are key. Honoring your voice with others means setting boundaries and sticking to them. Don’t be ashamed of your boundaries. You need to do the thing that will keep you on your recovery path.

2. Take a shower and get dressed

Getting up and out of bed can seem insurmountable during a bad day. If you can just get yourself to sit on the edge of your bed with your feet on the floor, you’re already halfway there. Taking a shower is not only a good idea because you’re cleaning up, but just standing under the running water can be revitalizing. After a nice shower, put on some clean clothes. This will give you the motivation to do some things for your body.

3. Maintain a healthy body

There are so many necessary things you can do in order to take care of your body. Being active is a good first step. You don’t have to do vigorous exercise every day, but taking a walk through the park or around your neighborhood is sufficient. After this movement, make sure you’re feeding your body nutritious food. Food is fuel, without it you’ll be unable to do most of the things on this list. Drinking a good amount of water is also very important. Lastly, getting enough sleep each night gives your body time to rest and refuel for the next day. These things may seem like simple steps, but they’ll make a world of difference.

4. Try something new

Breaking up your daily routine is a healthy way to give yourself a little push. You can try a new hobby or use a new coping skill if things get too tough. Talking to an old friend that you may not have spoken to in a while can also be a nice, new thing you can implement in your routine. Allow yourself to have some fun — you deserve it.

5. Give yourself a break

If you’ve done a few things on this list, you’ve accomplished so much. We are so proud of you. You might be feeling a bit tired, so giving yourself a break is a necessary step. You’re allowed to pause when things get overwhelming. Practicing mindfulness or just simply sitting with your feelings is okay. Allow yourself this time to take a break from the day. You need it after accomplishing so much.
