Brené Brown — Wholehearted Living

Brené Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston who studies courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy (Brené Brown). The Gifts of Imperfection was her first book. In it, she outlined how to like wholeheartedly. To live wholeheartedly, you must let go of one thing to nurture another. What is wholehearted living?

“Wholehearted living is about engaging with our lives from a place of worthiness. It means cultivating the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think, ‘No matter what gets done and how much left is undone, I am enough.’ It’s going to bed at night and thinking, ‘Yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable and sometimes afraid, but that doesn’t change the truth that I am also brave and worthy of love and belonging.'” (Brené Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection.)

What are the 10 things I must work on the cultivate a full life?

  • Authenticity

When you think of authenticity, you should be thinking of genuineness. To be genuine, let go of what other people think of you. If you are focused on others, you will never be able to allow yourself to be who you are and who you want to be.

  • Self-compassion

Self-compassion means accepting the fact that you cannot be perfect. Be kind and understanding to yourself. You can’t be perfect, and that’s totally okay. 

  • A resilient spirit

Resiliency doesn’t mean you can get away from adversity. Adversity is going to be there whether you like it or not. Resiliency means that you will face difficulty and remain stable. You will be true to yourself and act in power. You’ve got this. 

Joy over happiness is what Brown preaches. Happiness is situational, while joy is a mindset. Choose joy today.

  • Intuition and trusting faith

You won’t be sure of everything all of the time. There are going to be things you can’t control. Trusting your intuition and faith means that you will occasionally feel shame and vulnerability. That’s okay.

  • Creativity

Creativity is subjective. Everyone is creative in their own way. Try not to compare yourself to others and their work. You are you. Let go of comparison and create!

  • Play and rest

Productivity is not self-worth. Play and rest today. You are allowed to do things just because you find them fun. Play hard, then rest well. 

  • Calm and stillness

Allow yourself to feel the calmness in your life. Don’t avoid stillness because you fear something bad will come from it. Try to let go of your anxieties and allow yourself to embrace the calmness in your life.

  • Meaningful work

Find meaning in the work that you do. Don’t just do it to check off the box. Let go of your self-doubt and expectations. Creating meaningful work that you love by embracing it.

  • Laughter, song, and dance

Don’t be so serious! Let go of your control. Allow yourself to laugh, sing, and dance. Life is better that way.
