Change Doesn’t Have to Be Scary

Many people avoid change at all costs because it usually requires them to leave their comfort zones and, well, that’s uncomfortable. These people who refuse change will live with things they don’t particularly like because they have come to get used to the routine they are in. Villa Tranquil Recovery is here to remind you that you do not have to put up with things that no longer serve you just because “that’s the way it’s always been done.” You are allowed to shake things up and try something new if your old habits aren’t giving you what you need. Furthermore, you don’t have to be so deathly afraid of making changes. Villa Tranquil Recovery is here to help.

Get Comfortable With the Idea of Being Uncomfortable

We’re not going to pretend that change won’t bring you some level of discomfort. Change will push you just beyond your comfort zone, but that’s not always a bad thing. Every wonderful opportunity that you currently have is because, at one point, you left your comfort zone to get it. Whether it be interviewing for a new job, applying to a new school, or asking someone out to dinner, these successes happened for you because you dared to leave your comfort zone. Nothing worth having ever comes easily. If you’re thinking about changing something that isn’t working for you — like quitting using substances — start by accepting the fact that it’s going to bring you some level of discomfort and difficulty. If your mind begins to ramp up at the thought of changing your ways, remember that there is help out there for when things get hard. You don’t have to do this alone.

Figure Out What Is Manageable for You

Everyone’s level of what they can manage is different. What feels like a simple walk in the park for one person may feel like an uphill battle for you. On the other hand, what feels like an uphill battle for that other person may feel like a simple walk in the park for you. This is to remind you that you must not compare your situation to anyone else’s situation. You have the inside scoop on your life and not anyone else’s. Focus on controlling what is in your power to control and figure out how much you can take on. The changes you make should take you out of your comfort zone and challenge you a bit, but not be so challenging that it pushes you over the edge. Figure out what you can handle and try your best to implement the change.

 Check in With Yourself

It’s important to check in with yourself every once in a while to see how things are going. Think about how the changes you are implementing are benefiting your recovery and giving you a sense of fulfillment. If this isn’t the case, it might be time to reassess if the changes you’re making are the right ones. It’s also important to make sure that the changes you are making are SMART — specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. Finally, make sure you are being patient with yourself and appreciating the journey. You have the power to make changes in your recovery that will help you succeed!
