These skills will allow you to leave your recovery program equipped with the right tools to take care of yourself and to ensure that you are occupying your time with productive, healthy hobbies and activities.

Time Management

When you are in the midst of addiction, you spend almost all of your time focusing on that addiction. Then, when you enter a treatment program, your focus is on healing and finding new ways to enjoy life. As you leave rehabilitation, the realization that you have to readjust to managing a normal, everyday life can be jarring. You may want to start slow and keep your days open and relaxing, but this can lead to procrastination or boredom. But if you fill every minute with activities, you may become frustrated when you aren’t able to accomplish everything. Both of these situations can result in stress, and with stress comes the danger of relapse.

At Villa Tranquil, we help you to learn how to productively manage your time so that you can find a happy medium that works for you. In our counseling and therapy programs, you can establish basic time management techniques like making to-do lists, knowing your limitations and learning to say “no” when your schedule is too full. When it comes time to go home, you’ll be armed with the right tools to help you stay substance-free.

Day-to-Day Scheduling

Addiction and substance abuse make it easy to lose track of time. Those who struggle with addiction are often seen as unreliable or flaky because their addiction often takes over and prevents them from understanding the importance of other commitments. When you enter recovery and learn how to take control of your life back from your addiction, it is often a challenge to adjust to having responsibilities like school or work. Sticking to a regular schedule can make it easier to keep track of where you need to be or what you need to do, and when.

The dedication it takes to create and maintain a schedule is often underestimated. This is not to say that it is too hard; rather, it becomes much easier when you learn tips and tricks to make everything run smoothly. Scheduling and time management are closely linked; once you determine how much time you have in the day, you can have a better handle on when you can get everything done. And, Villa Tranquil offers classes and workshops to help you learn useful scheduling practices like keeping a calendar, setting reminders and how to start planning ahead without losing track of your commitments.

Long-Term Goal Setting

Those who struggle with addiction don’t always think about their life in a few months or a few years from the present. They are focused on their addiction and the next time they can satisfy their cravings, and often have trouble thinking about the long-term consequences of their actions. In recovery, setting milestones for yourself in the future can give you extra motivation to sober — and, at Villa Tranquil, we aim to provide you with long-term tools to help you set goals of all sizes, from staying sober 24 hours to finding a new job. We value thinking ahead in your everyday life — scheduling a doctor’s appointment next week, or planning a trip with your friends in a month.

We also emphasize the importance of support groups and self-help meetings. We find that they are a great way to start small with time management and scheduling — they give you something to hold yourself accountable to and something you can look forward to daily or weekly. These meetings also use a system of achievement and rewards for hitting long-term sobriety goals and place value in your ability to stay sober while creating a community of people who can set an example and learn from each other.

Meal Planning and Preparation

Unhealthy eating habits are one of the biggest obstacles faced by people struggling with addiction. Preparing healthy meals is often the last thing on your mind — it can seem difficult and daunting, especially when there are easier options like fast food or snacks. But paying for junk food for every meal is both financially irresponsible and very damaging to your body. Learning how to shop for food, plan meals and avoid waste is one of the most important skills you can learn during your recovery at Villa Tranquil.

We have an in-house chef to prepare your meals while you are here, and a licensed dietician on staff for nutritional counseling. If you have specific dietary needs or restrictions, we accommodate those with personalized grocery shopping and meal preparation. During your nutritional counseling sessions, you will learn essential independent living skills like how to grocery shop responsibly, how to prepare healthy foods that you enjoy and tips to make meal preparation easier.
