Dealing with Judgement

Feeling like people are judging everything you do is a horrible feeling. Living a life where you are worried about those judgments and let them bring you down, is not living your life at all. Judgment is emotionally damaging and can have a significantly negative impact on your life. Don’t let the judgment of others, or even the fear of that judgment, stand in the way of your successful recovery. Below are some tips for handling judgment in your life.

  1. Be honest. Is it someone else judging you or are you judging yourself? Far too often the real judgment comes from within. People take their criticisms and project them onto other people in the form of judgment. Be honest with yourself though, as it might not be about them at all. Don’t be so hard on yourself and give yourself credit for how far you’ve come already.
  2. Forget about perfection. Life isn’t about perfection. It isn’t your job to be perfect and please everyone else. Stop trying to be what everyone else wants you to be and be what you want to be. Create the life of sobriety that is rewarding and fulfilling and is the life you deserve. When you begin to focus on your well-being the judgments of others won’t even be a blip on your radar.
  3. Stop the negativity. When you know someone is judging you and you allow their negativity to burrow inside of you and bring you down, you perpetuate the cycle of negativity.
  4. Say enough is enough. There is only so much you can do. You are only human, and your priority is to get the help you need. You are only as good to others as you are to yourself. When it becomes apparent that you may never make someone happy, say enough is enough and walk away. Sometimes that is easier said than done. Love yourself enough to walk away when that is what you need. Do it for you!
