Dealing with Loss During the Holidays

Grief affects everyone differently. For someone dealing with addiction, handling the loss of a loved one can be an immensely complicated process. Remember, though, that time eases the pain, and you can do this. You are not alone.

The holidays can create an intense increase in the impact of such a loss. If you or someone you care about is dealing with loss this holiday season, here are some tips to share.

  1. Create a new tradition in memory of the person you’ve lost.
  2. Recognize the holidays won’t be the same now that the person is gone.
  3. Consider the location for your holiday celebration. Possibly changing to a new site will ease some of the pain by allowing you to see the reality of the loss.
  4. Communicate with your family and friends. Let them know you are grieving. They may be, as well. Set expectations for the holidays, so that no one is surprised or caught off guard now that things will be different.
  5. Try preparing a favorite dish of your loved one that is no longer with you and serve this during the festivities.
  6. In remembrance of your loved one, light a candle in your home.
  7. To honor the memory of your loved one, donate to a charity that they supported or a cause that is dear to you.
  8. Reach out to your support system. Maybe it is a phone call or meeting for coffee, but reach out to those that know about your recovery journey and let them know you are having a hard time with the loss. Speaking to a counselor or therapist about the loss may also be helpful.
  9. If it is just too hard, skip the festivities this year. Do what is best for you, as you don’t need additional pressure or exposure to triggers and cravings. The holidays are tough, and your sobriety is a priority. Don’t feel guilty for taking care of yourself.
  10. Focus on gratitude. Remember all of your blessings. From small to large, there are blessings everywhere. Make a list of these blessings and read it when things get tough. You can do this!
