Does A Woman’s Age Influence Her Mental Health?

Depression and anxiety can change in a woman’s life as her life changes with age. Age presents new experiences with fluctuations in hormones that can cause an increase in the severity of symptoms in both depression and anxiety. Many components in a woman’s changing age can contribute to depression and anxiety changing over time. Hormones change with age, but also with significant live events exclusive to women: menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, and perimenopause. Hormone changes can also be caused by a change in thyroid productivity. An overactive or an underactive thyroid, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism respectively, could contribute to either or both depression and anxiety. As a woman ages, her energy levels also change. Older age seems to be readily equated with feeling tired, lethargic, and fatigued. Energy is also related to hormones and can be related to the thyroid. Healthy lifestyle choices can contribute to a more sustainable and higher level of energy, but chronic illness can get in the way of even the healthiest woman. Growing older for a woman means facing the potential of new health risks, which can include chronic illnesses. Osteoporosis, heart disease, cancer, and many other health risks can alter hormones, affect the thyroid, and inhibit levels of energy needed for living an active, healthy lifestyle.

Even without health risks, lifestyle changes can take place that also have an impact on an aging woman’s mental health. Pregnancy and motherhood, for example, is a considerably lifestyle change. When a woman’s mother is aging and she has to become a caretaker, that is a considerable lifestyle change. There are marriages and divorces, careers and unemployment, financial liberty and financial restriction. A change in lifestyle can influence the way a woman sees herself on the outside and the inside, altering the way she feels about herself and contributing to her sense of self-worth as well as self-esteem.

Aging women in Hollywood often provide the best example when they undergo plastic surgery- which is the complete and autonomous right of any woman to do. Pressured by a culture and industry focused on looks, how female actors view themselves on the outside influences how they feel about themselves on the inside. Youthfulness and beauty too often go hand in hand, making the aging process confusing and tumultuous for women. When a woman loses her sense of self, which innumerable life circumstances can contribute to, she loses balance in her mental health. She becomes anxious. She becomes depressed. She becomes angry. She becomes sad. She might persevere and overcome without a care in the world or she might turn to drugs and alcohol to cope, perpetuating her problems with mental health.

Thankfully, a woman’s age does not have an influence on her ability to seek treatment, get the clinical therapeutic support she needs and live an entire new life in recovery.
