Emotions and Early Recovery

Congratulations on making your first step in recovery and deciding to get help! For some people, early recovery is a difficult and confusing time with extreme highs and lows. While it may seem impossible to handle at first, know that the emotional roller coaster will eventually stop and stabilize.

We understand this part of the recovery process is complicated and hard. In the past, we simply reached for the bottle to cope with difficult emotions, such as: guilt, shame or fear. While this may have helped temporarily, we now understand the serious consequences of this pattern. The ability to handle these emotions is part of our emotional recovery (also called emotional sobriety), which means learning to cope with negative emotions that may lead to discomfort and cravings.

The question now is: what are we feeling and why?

1. To put it simply, the first answer is change. We have come to a crossroads and drinking is just not working anymore. As we put the drink down and decide on our next step (perhaps treatment or a recovery program), we are making a huge decision to change our past. This may lead to cutting ties with family or friends who still use, making new sober friends, finding new activities to replace our old habits, and transforming our lives in a whole new way.

2. The next answer is: feelings. New things are bubbling up and we are starting to get back in touch with our emotions, including ones we used to drown out. It may feel uncomfortable at first, but if we manage to push past the principal uneasiness, the rewards are incredible.

3. Sleep and nutritional deprivation. Our bodies are undergoing mental and physical replenishing and this can feel draining. During this time, it is important to sleep well and nourish our body.

4. Mental health issues. For some, we have used drugs to blanket over our (sometimes) undiagnosed mental illness and they are now coming into the spotlight.

We understand this may seem overwhelming. Find reassurance that many addicts experience these emotional highs and lows during treatment.
