Focus On What’s In Your Control

Coming to terms with what is in your control or out of your control can be difficult. You may not want to deal with something that is actually in your control, or you may be too focused on something that’s out of your control. Many people use control as a defense mechanism. Individuals like this may try to control every little aspect of everything, no matter how minor it may seem to other people. This can be in response to feelings of lack of control in other areas of their life. Ultimately though, the person is usually left unsatisfied because they realize that they can’t control everything. Try to focus on what you can manage and let go of the rest.

What is out of my control?

  • The actions of other people
  • The words of other people
  • The opinions of other people

What is in my control?

  • What you say and do
  • Your self-care and boundaries
  • Your opinions, thoughts, and actions

Deciding what you can and can’t control can be a tricky thing. There may be some gray areas where it’s hard to determine. Villa Tranquil Recovery is here to give you a general rule: if it focuses on you, it’s probably in your control. If it focuses on others, it’s probably out of your control. Deciding what to put your time and energy into is a tough thing to figure out. You must realize that you do not have an unlimited supply of time and energy. You can’t stay focused on the things you can control, because then you’re neglecting the things you can.

Even if something is out of your control, you do have a say in how you react. Effort and attitude occur in any situation. These are two things that you must focus on prioritizing. This may be the only thing you can control, and that’s okay. Focus on being the best you that you can be.

If you’re struggling with trying to control things that are out of your control, ask yourself why. What are you afraid of happening if you relinquish your control? You may be trying to control the outcome so you don’t get hurt, or maybe you think you won’t be able to deal with the consequences. Whatever it may be, realize that you cannot control the situation no matter how hard you try.

Villa Tranquil Recovery is here for you when you are struggling. Call our trained and experienced staff today to learn more about how we can help you. Reach us at 214-799-3080. We can’t wait to hear from you!
