Getting Through The Holidays

For those with an addiction or co-occurring mental illness, getting through the holidays can be a hard thing to get through. The holidays are supposed to be a time of happiness and celebration. For many, though, the holidays are a reminder of an addiction or mental health struggle. Alcohol is most likely present at family gatherings, get-togethers with friends, and holiday office parties. This can be an extremely difficult test for those trying to maintain their sobriety. Here are some tips to help you stay sober throughout one of the most challenging times of the year. 

Keep busy

If you are struggling this holiday season to maintain your sobriety, find a way to distract yourself. You can make yourself useful to keep busy by helping out in the kitchen, with decorations, washing dishes, or just making conversation with those around you. Keeping your mind and body busy helps to distract you from your urge to use. If you find yourself getting bored or antsy, you’re not distracting yourself well enough. Find something to do to get through a complicated social gathering. 

Be creative 

Another way to distract yourself from your desire to use would be to get creative. This can be in the form of putting lots of effort into gift-giving. Making gift baskets can be a huge way to stay involved with something healthy. You can craft, buy gifts, and organize the basket. This gives you a lot to do and doesn’t give yourself the time for your mind to wander. 

Don’t expect perfection

Perfectionism leaves no room for error. Of course, we don’t want to find ourselves struggling. But if you mess up one time, it’s not the end of the world. You will be okay. If you find yourself amidst a relapse, attend an extra 12-step meeting or reach out to your sponsor for advice. You can also make sure you are getting enough sleep, eating healthily, and drinking an adequate amount of water. Other self-care techniques can be journaling or drawing to get your emotions out. Whatever it is, don’t beat yourself up too much. You’re allowed to make a mistake. It’s not the end of the world.
