Healing from Codependency After Addiction Treatment

Returning home after addiction treatment is a huge transition. It’s a real test of the skills you’ve learned in early recovery. While in treatment, there were probably other things beyond substance abuse that you learned to handle. Villa Tranquil Recovery offers many programs, including family counseling, interpersonal skills, and boundary setting. All of these things are important because many people struggling with addictions also find themselves in codependent relationships. You can heal from unhealthy relationships after addiction treatment. Continue reading to learn more.

What is Codependency?

By definition, codependency is an “excessive emotional or psychological reliance on a partner.” People in codependent relationships often say that the relationship feels one-sided. They may also feel like they are walking on eggshells for fear of letting down their partner. If you are in a codependent relationship and have returned home from treatment, you must heal from the unhealthy aspects of the relationship.

Healing from Codependency

If you have been in a codependent relationship for a long time, it’s going to take some time and effort to break the cycle and heal. Don’t get discouraged if it’s uncomfortable or hard to do — nothing worth having comes easily. An excellent first step is to talk with a professional about the feelings you’re harboring. If you are the person that is codependent on your partner, you must allow yourself to fulfill your wants and needs on your own. You cannot rely entirely on your partner for everything. There need to be healthy boundaries set by both people so that each of you is self-reliant and capable of taking care of yourself.

Sometimes, a codependent relationship is so unhealthy that it makes more sense to end the relationship. You are allowed to leave a relationship that is unhealthy and painful. You do not have to feel responsible for your partner’s health and happiness. You can use the skills you learned in treatment to enforce boundaries and make sure there are no codependent behaviors occurring in your relationship. The transition home may be difficult, but it’s essential to keep up the good work once you return home.
