How Can I Cope with Stress?

Whether it be the person using or their surrounding family members, everyone struggles with stress. There’s no way to escape it. There are, however, ways to cope with the stressors in your life. Villa Tranquil Recovery wants to be the support for you, whether you are the person using or a loved one wanting to help. Read below for key ways to cope with stress.

Exercise

There are so many benefits to exercise. We have already talked about how exercise can improve mood and lower anxiety. Exercise can also be beneficial for dealing with stress. Whether it’s moving to the beat of your favorite song, walking around your neighborhood, or going for a run with a friend, any amount of movement can help de-stress you. Exercising doesn’t have to be a planned thing, either. Exercise can mean parking at the end of the parking lot and briskly walking into the store or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Exercise helps relieve stress because when you are exercising, your brain is releasing endorphins that make you feel better. Another positive thing about exercising is that when you are exercising, your mind is busy, which means you most likely won’t be stressing about what’s happening in your life.

Maintain friendships

Like exercising, building and maintaining friendships and other relationships has a beneficial component to reducing stress. Maintaining friendships doesn’t have to be hard. You can text a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while and invite them to lunch, or grab coffee with a loved one. Maintaining friendships doesn’t have to be a big event. You don’t have to plan a weekend getaway or set a goal to make three new friends this month. Just try to nurture your existing relationships. Focusing on a friend, being an active listener, and engaging with others are all positive ways to cope with your stress.

Recognize your unhealthy coping mechanisms

When someone is feeling stressed, a slew of unhealthy coping mechanisms often come out of the woodwork. These unhealthy ways of coping may look different for each person. For some, they may withdraw socially and begin to sleep more. Others may begin to rely on alcohol or drugs for relief. The sooner you recognize your unhealthy coping skills, the sooner you will be able to transform them into healthy ones.

Be mindful of your attitude

When someone is feeling stressed, they may begin to engage in negative self-talk. Be mindful of the thoughts swirling around in your head. Take note of times you are overthinking. Changing the way you look at life can help change how you deal with stress.

Create a plan for when you are stressed

Making sure you have a plan for the extremely stressful times is the biggest key. If you don’t have the tools ready to deal with stress, you will fall back into unhealthy coping mechanisms and into a negative attitude. Having a stress plan can look like meditating, journaling, or reading. They don’t have to be big things. Often, it’s the little things that make us feel better.
