Listen to Your Body

Listening to your body is essential in your recovery. If you aren’t able to get in touch with yourself, you’ll never truly know what you need. Listening to your body means knowing when you’ve had enough so that you can treat yourself with the compassion you deserve. During your time with us at Villa Tranquil, you’re going to get to know yourself and your needs. This process of learning and growing your relationship with yourself doesn’t stop when you go home, however. This is a relationship that you must nurture daily if you want to be successful in sobriety. Do at least one thing each day that can further your relationship with yourself and your recovery. You’ll find that building this time into your routine is essential for success.

Listen to Your Body

Listening to your body takes time and patience, so don’t get frustrated if you don’t recognize its signals right off the bat. Take time to check in with yourself throughout the day to make sure that you aren’t missing something vital. One of the biggest things that we often miss is our body’s signal that we need to rest. You may be so focused on that big project from work or school that you push yourself past your limit. This is when you might find yourself not only exhausted but also feeling sick. Oftentimes, symptoms of exhaustion are sent from our immune system telling us that we need a break. If you want to avoid the gut punch of sickness after an exhausting week, think about scheduling in some time to rest before things get too bad. Listen to the cries of rest your body is sending you. It could save you in the long run.

Get in Touch with Yourself

If you are having trouble even hearing the cries of rest from your body, you probably don’t know where to begin. Instead of giving up, start by doing something good for yourself. Your body will notice and you’ll be able to pick up on its signals with a little practice. One way to get in touch with yourself is to carve out time in your busy schedule to do something enjoyable. It doesn’t have to be a huge block of time. You can benefit from five or ten minutes of rest. Use these few minutes to practice a hobby or be unproductive. Don’t overthink the rest. Allow yourself to reset.

A few more things you can do to get in touch with yourself are to focus on what is in your control, build in rewards for yourself to keep you moving forward and tune in to your body’s changes. Be patient and attentive. You’ll find something that works for you. You’ve just got to be willing to listen.
