Many people love the holidays. They can’t wait for chilly weather and gift exchanges. However, for sober people, there’s a lot more to think about once the holiday season rolls around. The holidays are often a major trigger for people in recovery, usually because of an abundance of substances at every get-together with friends or large gatherings of extended family where people are more stressed than usual. Recognizing that the holidays are a difficult time for you is essential so that you can have a plan in place to stay sober. Take a look below at some things you can do to help maintain your recovery during the holidays:

  • Plan ahead

You always want to set yourself up for success. A way to do that is to make sure you plan ahead. The worst thing you can do is rush into something without considering the consequences and how they will impact you. How are you going to arrive at a holiday party? It’s typically advisable to take your own car so that you have a way of getting home once you decide you want to leave. How are you going to protect your sobriety? It’s essential to know how you’re going to respond if someone offers you a drink. The more you plan and practice how you’re going to make decisions that benefit your sobriety, the easier and more natural it will feel in the moment.

  • Have support

In general, recovery can’t be done on your own. This remains especially true during the holidays. Allow yourself to lean on your support system during challenging moments. If you’re worried about staying sober during a large gathering, bring a sober friend or family member along. It can be overwhelming to navigate obstacles alone. (This is also part of planning ahead!) Your sober friends understand the difficulties of the holiday season. Work together to create a plan that will help make your holiday season run a bit easier. 

  • Prioritize self-care

Self-care is vital. It’s essential to be proactive in your recovery. Don’t be reactive by waiting until a problem arises to use the self-care tools you have. Get ahead of the game by getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and exercising often. These are the foundation blocks of your recovery.
