Mental Health Self-Care: 5 Things You’re Forgetting To Do

When you’re in the midst of a triggering episode, you are probably forgetting to do some basic self-care activities. There are so many different things you can do to help yourself. Some of them are so easy that you’re probably forgetting to do them. We know, however, that amid a hard moment nothing seems easy. We’re here to help remind you that there are things you can do to help yourself feel a bit better. These are five things you’re forgetting to do that can make a huge difference.

1. Get dressed

Although this seems like a given, we often forget to do the simple things. We may not have the motivation to change our clothes; doing the simple things takes a lot of effort. We want to remind you that by changing out of your pajamas, you are telling yourself, probably unconsciously, that you are one step closer to tackling the day. The better you physically feel, the better you’ll mentally feel. It may seem like changing clothes and getting dressed is insignificant, but it’s just one simple thing you can do to help get a jumpstart on the day.

2. Give yourself a compliment

After getting dressed, give yourself a compliment. Although you may think that it’s a simple task, you completed something on your to-do list! Give yourself a pat on the back. Acknowledge that you’re doing something to help yourself. Using positive self-talk works wonders. There’s no reason to bring yourself down. You’re doing great.

3. Ask for help

If you feel like you are struggling to complete a task, ask for help. Asking for help isn’t weak; it doesn’t mean you are failing. By asking for help, you’re allowing yourself to care for you.  We can’t do everything alone. Those around us are there to help us. Let them help you.

4. Take a break

If you’ve completed a couple of things on your to-do list, you’re probably mentally and physically tired. Allow yourself to rest. You don’t have to complete everything on your list all at once. Take a break: read a book, watch your favorite movie, step outside and take in your surroundings. You break doesn’t have to be a long one, but just enough to reset your frame of mind.

5. Use a coping skill

If you’re struggling throughout the day, you may be forgetting to use a coping skill. We’re here to remind you that coping skills are on your side. They help more than you think they do. The coping skills you have in your toolbox are tailored to you. Use one of them during a rough spot. That’s what they’re there for.

At Villa Tranquil Recovery, we want to help remind you to practice self-care. We’re here for you while you’re with us, but also when you return home and back to your normal, daily life. These are pretty simple things you can do to help practice healthy self-care. To find out more self-care options, inquire today at 214-799-3080.
