More Signs You’re A Problem Drinker

Problem drinking can be more than meets the eyes. If your problem drinking is getting out of control, these are common signs.

…If when you drink, you tend to black out and lose chunks of memory

Blacking out may seem like the ultimate sign of alcoholism, but it is not. Problem drinkers can experience blackouts because they drink excessively in a short period of time. Blacking out can mean losing chunks of memory. You might be a problem drinker if you notice that every time you drink, you wake up not remembering certain parts about the day or night before. More surprising is when you learn details that you didn’t know you didn’t remember. You might find that the episodes are becoming increasingly worse.

…If when you drink, you become irresponsible

Responsibility and alcohol intoxication don’t usually go hand in hand. However, with problem drinking, your ability to be responsible when you aren’t intoxicated is becoming more difficult. You might prioritize your drinking time of the week over everything else. Or, the amount you are drinking when you are drinking makes it difficult for you to complete your responsibilities the other days of the week. If your weekend drinking makes your week day job more difficult to do, you are certainly experiencing problem drinking.

…If when you drink, people tell you to cut down on drinking

Once you pop the fun don’t stop and it makes people who are about you nervous. You assure them they have nothing to worry about, that you don’t drink like this all the time, and that you are fine throughout the rest of the week. What your friends and family are trying to tell you is that it doesn’t matter how infrequently you drink but that when you do, you drink too much. People who don’t have a problem with drinking don’t need to be told that they have a problem with drinking. Typically, if your family and friend network is going out of their way to let you know they think you have a problem, you probably do.

…If when you drink, you face unpleasant consequences the next day

You don’t go through symptoms of withdrawals, but you do go through symptoms of a hangover, which are really just mild symptoms of withdrawals. The responsibilities you cannot fulfill stack up. What you learned about your actions and behaviors from the night before get in the way of being able to tackle your to do list. The bottom line is, your problem drinking is a problem and you need to change your approach to alcohol.
