Overcoming the Stigma of Addiction

Stigma is a widespread issue for many people, but those dealing with substance abuse seem to deal with it extensively. This intense and pervasive stigma pushes people who are suffering further and further away from the treatment they desperately need and deserve. The 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health reported that 21.2 million people aged 12 or older needed substance use treatment over the past year. In contrast, only 3.7 million people aged 12 or older actually received any substance use treatment over the past year. That’s a whopping 83% of people who don’t receive treatment who need it. Villa Tranquil Recovery is committed to reducing stigma and making sure our treatment is as accessible as possible.

The Impacts of Stigma

The vast majority of people who need substance use treatment but don’t receive it are fearful of the consequences. Stigma has pushed the guilt of addiction onto the person struggling and made it seem like the addiction is their fault, making them a bad person. As a result, addicted people struggle to remain silent about their need for treatment for fear of negative impacts in their daily lives. The 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health reported that many felt like there would be a negative effect on their job if they reached out for treatment. Many also felt like their friends and family would perceive them negatively if they learned of their substance abuse. These concerns are real and valid, but we can work together to diminish the stigma around asking for substance abuse help. The more we work toward and accomplish the diminishing of stigma, the more lives we will save.

Making Treatment Accessible

Other addicted people reported to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health that care was not accessible. Some people could not afford the price of treatment; others did not even know where to begin getting themselves the help they needed. By reducing some of the stigmas around substance abuse, we can talk more openly about treatment options and make treatment accessible for everyone involved.
