Remember Just for Today

At the beginning of almost every recovery story lies the fear of never using again. Recovery from addiction is an ongoing process taken step-by-step, or as they say in Alcoholics Anonymous, one day at at time. While it may feel impossible to achieve and maintain sobriety, remember that any big goal is accomplished in small, digestible chunks. Addiction recovery is no different.

Early recovery is a vulnerable time as we deal with staggering emotions, such as guilt, shame, or embarrassment. We may also be projecting into the future the fear of long-term sobriety. During this time, we are more susceptible to falling back into old patterns as we obsess about this relapse or the last. The most important thing we can do is pause and ask: what can we do about this situation right now? If the answer is nothing, push it aside.

The foundation of recovery is positivity and mindfulness. One day at a time is the promise of balance, compassion, and hope. You may look at others with one, five, ten, or thirty years and wonder how they managed to say sober. The answer is always the same. The action of sobriety is taken day by day, moment by moment, and (sometimes) second by second. One day at a time works because focusing on staying sober just for today feels more attainable than thinking about tomorrow.

If you find yourself stuck in worry, be kind and remember you are not alone. When you are feeling disconnected, here are some tips on how to get unstuck:

1. Keep a gratitude journal: focusing on what you have is a great way to center you in positivity.

2. Be there for others: being of service to others will help you get out of your own head.

3. Practice self-love: be kind to yourself because you are doing the best you can.

4. Reach out: isolation is dangerous and you are never alone.

While sobriety may sometimes feel slow going, every day we choose not to drink is another step in our growth. Getting to a place of peace, balance, and hope may not be easy, but if we practice mindful principles in our lives, things will get better one day at a time.
