Self-Care: A Process

Self-care isn’t something you can push off. It’s also not something you can rush through to complete quickly and then move on. Well, you can…but it won’t do you any good. Self-care must be intentional. You have to keep it in mind throughout the day. You have to make an effort to consciously complete little acts. You have to be purposeful.

There are so many things that factor into self-care. Making sure you’re getting enough restful sleep, eating good portions of healthy food throughout the day, staying out of isolation, avoiding triggers. These are a few of the many things you can do to practice self-care. Being mindful of your actions is the key to self-care. Give yourself permission to do one thing at a time. Devote your whole being to that one thing. Mindfulness over multitasking is the way to go.

Adequate human interaction is a really important part of self-care than those struggling with their mental health often neglect. Making sure you give yourself alone time is good, but don’t do it to the point of isolation. Grant yourself time to be with friends and family whose presence doesn’t feel like a chore. Humans are wired for interaction. Make sure to nurture this part of your needs.

You may not notice it at first, but doing these small things add up. Self-care isn’t something you can complete in a day and forget about until it’s necessary to remember again. You must nurture it daily. You also will not be a pro at self-care the first couple of times you try it. Self-care is a process that regularly requires time and effort. It’s a process that builds upon itself every time you complete one tiny thing for yourself. Allow yourself the time and energy to devote toward self-care — you will not regret it.
