SNACK On Mindfulness

Stress is inevitable. For some people, it may build and build and become a constant in our lives. You may begin to feel overwhelmed by the stress. You may even have difficulty handling situations when you feel this overwhelming stress. Because of this, substances may be your go-to. Villa Tranquil Recovery wants to help give you a tool to use when you’re feeling stressed so you don’t have to reach for substances to calm your urges. Instead, try a mindfulness SNACK.

Stop

Take a break. You deserve it. Step away from whatever you’re doing and breathe deeply. You may be moving so rapidly that you don’t realize your short and shallow breaths. Whatever you’re doing can wait a few moments. If you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or have an urge to use: stop and breathe. 

Notice

Take a moment to notice what is going on around you. Where are you? What are you doing? What is happening within you? Maybe your heart is beating out of your chest or your thoughts are racing. Feel what is happening in your body. Relax the tense areas and breathe deeply again. 

Accept

Acceptance can be a difficult thing for anyone, but especially for someone dealing with a mental illness or substance use disorder. First, figure out what the stress is about. Then, you can learn to accept it. Allow yourself to feel your feelings. Remind yourself that it is okay. You don’t need judgment when it comes to your thoughts and feelings. Accept them for what they are, and then you can move along. 

Curiosity

Grounding is an important step. Ask yourself questions about your surroundings, feelings, and current experiences in order to ground yourself. Figure out what you need as a result of these answers and how you can make what you need happen. 

Kindness

You deserve the kindness you give to other people. Try not to judge yourself or be unnecessarily harsh. You don’t deserve that. Take a deep breathe and calm down. Talk to yourself like you would a friend or even your younger self. Be kind — it matters.
