Sustaining Your Sobriety in Good Times and in Bad Times

Sobriety isn’t an easy thing to accomplish. You don’t get a life free from challenges the moment you commit to a sober lifestyle. Sobriety is something that you must work toward every day. It’s a conscious decision to live each moment substance-free. You may not be able to avoid obstacles, but you can use these tips to help sustain your sobriety. Check them out below!

Redirect Your Attention

Many things will attempt to throw you off your recovery journey. Boredom is one of those things. It’s essential to have a way to direct your attention away from your desire to use substances and toward a healthy activity that can keep you busy. Having a hobby that you enjoy and can lose yourself in for hours can be a huge help. You can also redirect your attention to other people who need help. Volunteering is a great way to help others and keep yourself busy. Find something that you love and allow yourself to put all of your attention and energy into it. It can help you sustain a successful, life-long recovery.

Reframe Your Negative Thoughts

The next way you can keep up your sobriety is to reframe the negative thoughts you may have. Cognitive distortions are common for people battling addictions. These are ways your mind tricks you into thinking negatively, such as catastrophizing or filtering. Being able to identify when you are thinking irrationally is the first step. Once you realize that your negative thoughts are false and trying to throw you off, you’ll be able to reframe them. Try to change your perspective. Is there a silver lining you can find in a difficult situation? Try to view a challenge as a way that you can strengthen areas in which you are weak. You have the power to reframe your thoughts and come out stronger!

Reach Out to Your Support System

If you’re struggling with sobriety and fear a relapse during difficult situations, reach out to your support system for help. They are there to help you stay on track and make healthy and safe decisions. Talk the problem through with a loved one and figure out a plan of action that doesn’t include substance use. You can do this!
