The Benefits of Mindfulness

Mindfulness has so many positives. It can help with both mental health recovery and substance use recovery. Mindfulness can be taught in an individual or group setting. You don’t have to be a professional to receive the benefits of mindfulness. Take a breath, kick back, and relax. Villa Tranquil Recovery is here to give you the benefits of mindfulness.

Moving Past Stigma

If you are struggling with a mental illness or a substance use disorder, you are not alone. You may feel like it, but please know that there are so many people out there who are feeling the same way you are feeling. You may begin to feel ashamed or like you need to hide from the outside world. The sooner you accept that you deserve help, the better your recovery will be.

Stigma is out there when it comes to invisible disabilities. You may feel like your family and friends don’t understand or accept you. It’s important to remember, however, that you need to understand and accept yourself. This is how you move past stigma.

Mindfulness in Therapy

Mindfulness is a skill that can be taught in different therapy settings. For Verity Gough, a freelance journalist who spoke to In The Moment magazine, she learned mindfulness through acceptance and commitment therapy. “Through our sessions, we learned how to use mindfulness as a way of quieting those voices that allowed negative feelings to take over and sabotage recovery,” Gough says.

This type of therapy was done in a group setting, she says, and while it was a bit daunting at first, sharing her story with others in a similar situation helped her feel less alone. Gough was able to learn a technique that was helpful. She would imagine herself driving a bus. T

he passengers on the bus were her thoughts and feelings. They were acting rowdy. She was able to tell these thoughts and feelings to be quiet through mindfulness. She was able to take control of them and shut them out. This was an important technique she learned through group therapy.

Furthermore, she says, “Mindfulness has helped me to appreciate the simple things in life and how to come to terms with what has happened to me. I’m able to relax more and by using the breathing techniques we learned, I can avoid letting stress take over in certain situations.” By diffusing stressful situations before they take over, she is able to accept her recovery.

Villa Tranquil Recovery is here to help you learn mindfulness techniques. It’s not a quick fix, however. It must become a part of your recovery routine. Call us today at (866) 697-7573 for more information.
