For Verity Gough, a freelance journalist who spoke to In The Moment magazine, she learned mindfulness through acceptance and commitment therapy. “Through our sessions, we learned how to use mindfulness as a way of quieting those voices that allowed negative feelings to take over and sabotage recovery,” Gough says.

This type of therapy was done in a group setting, she says, and while it was a bit daunting at first, sharing her story with others in a similar situation helped her feel less alone. Gough was able to learn a technique that was helpful. She would imagine herself driving a bus. T

he passengers on the bus were her thoughts and feelings. They were acting rowdy. She was able to tell these thoughts and feelings to be quiet through mindfulness. She was able to take control of them and shut them out. This was an important technique she learned through group therapy.

Furthermore, she says, “Mindfulness has helped me to appreciate the simple things in life and how to come to terms with what has happened to me. I’m able to relax more and by using the breathing techniques we learned, I can avoid letting stress take over in certain situations.” By diffusing stressful situations before they take over, she is able to accept her recovery.
