The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

The Four Agreements is a book written by Don Miguel Ruiz. It started out as a philosophy, a way of life. Ruiz then turned it into a book in 1997. “Everything we do is based on agreements we have made — agreements with ourselves, with other people, with God, with life. But the most important agreements are the ones we make with ourselves.” So, what are the four agreements?

  1. Be impeccable with your word
  2. Don’t take anything personally
  3. Don’t make assumptions
  4. Always do your best

Be impeccable with your word

Being impeccable with your word means speaking only the truth and saying what you mean. This means you refrain from telling lies or half-truths. Talking negatively or gossiping about others also needs to be removed from your speech. You want to honor your word by using your words for positive purposes. Remember: It’s not only what you say, but how you say it. Use your words to be kind and improve the space you’re in. Be impeccable with your word.

Don’t take anything personally

Not taking anything personally means knowing that nothing anyone else says has anything to do with you. What they say comes from their feelings and judgments, not who you are as a person. Their beliefs are not your beliefs, and their actions are not because of you. Try not to take what they say to heart, the good and, especially, the bad. It is not a reflection of who you are. Don’t take anything personally.

Don’t make assumptions

Not making assumptions means using strong communication skills to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. If you find yourself unsure of something or questioning intent, try not to guess at it. Ask questions and express your needs clearly without assuming. Don’t make assumptions.

Always do your best

Always doing your best means doing all that you can do to improve the world and your own life. This may seem simple, but most people go through life on autopilot, having hardly ever done their best. Doing your best means being flexible. Whatever the circumstance, try to avoid self-doubt, self-abuse, and regret. Always do your best.
