The Two Most Misunderstood Facts About Addiction

There are so many misconceptions about addiction. These misconceptions are harmful to those suffering from this very real disease — yes, addiction is a disease. Along with mental health myths are the facts that contradict them. Although each person’s experience is different, there are facts about addiction that are the same for everyone. Here are two facts about addiction that are often misunderstood.

1. Addiction is a disease.

It is proven that there are real changes that go on in the brain of someone that has an addiction. According to Harvard Health, there is a “pleasure principle” that comes into play in the brain of someone that has an addiction. There is a release of dopamine that is “so consistently tied with pleasure.” Dopamine plays a role in the brain’s reward system. Harvard Health says that “All drugs of abuse…cause a particularly powerful surge of dopamine…the likelihood that the use of a drug or participation in a rewarding activity will lead to addiction is directly linked to thee speed with which it promotes dopamine release, the intensity of that release, and the reliability of that release.” In short, the release of the neurotransmitter dopamine makes changes in the brain of someone with an addiction. Changes in the brain and body have always been referred to as a disease; addiction is no different.

2. You can treat addiction.

There are methods in which addiction can be treated. Medications and therapy may be used in order to treat those with addictions. Therapies that have been effectively used are cognitive-behavioral therapy, family therapy, and twelve-step programs, among others. Although someone cannot be “cured” of an addiction, being in recovery is possible. As mentioned before, addiction is a disease, just like any other. You cannot be cured of diabetes or heart disease, but these diseases can be managed and treated.
