The Upsides of Downtime

Our lives are so busy that we often wind up feeling like there aren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish all that we want or need to. You may even push your recovery to the back burner so that you can work overtime to complete that task for work or school. Your recovery, however, should not be tossed aside and picked up only when it is convenient for you. A successful recovery doesn’t work that way. You must set aside time to enhance your recovery each and every day. Part of your recovery time is carving out time to do nothing. It may come as a surprise, but there are upsides to downtime!

A Necessary Rest

Rest is a vital part of your recovery. If you don’t leave time for rest, all areas of your life will suffer. A huge part of rest is making sure that you get enough sleep at night and that the sleep you are getting is restful sleep. Sleep isn’t the only form of rest you need, however. Scheduling time to do nothing is also necessary. You don’t need to make sure every moment of your day is completely productive. Part of recovery is making sure that you allow yourself the time and space to do something that relaxes you so that you can refuel. Without downtime, you’ll quickly find yourself burnt out and struggling to make it through the week.

Let Go of Guilt

If you want to take advantage of the upsides of downtime, you’re going to need to let go of guilt. Our culture often rewards those who are productive, but it’s important to remember that your worth is not directly linked to your productivity. You don’t have to constantly keep yourself busy. Reward yourself by allowing yourself to unwind in whatever way best suits you. Try not to feel guilty about giving yourself some time off. You deserve the ability to refuel so that you can be at your best when you are being productive. Arguably one of the biggest upsides to downtime is that it allows you to recharge so that you can do your best when you are busy. If you don’t allow yourself some downtime, burnout will catch up with you.

Find What Works for You

Another plus to downtime is that there is no right way to rest. You don’t have to follow the latest trend to feel revitalized. In fact, if you are doing something that feels unnatural as your rest time, you won’t get any benefit from it. It’s important to find the type of rest that works for you. Often, rest can be maximized by finding activities that you can do alone, finding a healthy distraction from your worries, and being able to grant yourself permission to not be productive. Decide what you love to do and how you can manipulate it to help give you the best peaceful moment.
