Three Virtues to Have in Recovery

If the only thing you consider in recovery is sobriety, you’re doing the bare minimum. Recovery should be a complete transformation of your whole being — mind, body, and spirit. Sobriety, of course, is extremely important. However, if you are replacing your alcohol or drug use with another self-defeating and unhealthy coping mechanism but are content because you are technically sober, you’re doing recovery wrong. Villa Tranquil Recovery wants to help you reach every part of your being in recovery. This is why we offer life skills and time management tips, workshops to help you set boundaries and let go of codependent behaviors, crisis management counseling, interpersonal relationship groups, vocational support and financial management, and more. We promote holistic care because we truly believe that is the best way to have long-term success in recovery. Take a look at three virtues below that are beneficial to have in your recovery.

There are going to be times in your recovery where you have to step outside of your comfort zone to get what you need. It can be difficult to do something unfamiliar, but the feelings of completing something new can be exhilarating. Courage is somewhere inside of you, you just may have to dig down deep to find it. The thing about courage is that you must treat it like a muscle. If you enjoy working out and lifting weights, and you do it often, you might not have any trouble lifting 15 pounds. Think back to when you first started, however. You probably weren’t able to pick up 15 pounds with ease. Instead, you probably started with 5 pounds, then went to 10 when you were more confident. Courage works the same way. The more you practice it, the easier it gets and you become more comfortable relying on courage to get you through difficult moments. Today, start small. Find the courage to take one small step toward a goal. Tomorrow, take two small steps toward the goal. Keep it going.

This virtue aligns with sobriety the most. Temptations are everywhere. There will, without a doubt, be times in your recovery where you want to use substances. Having self-control is important in these moments. You must be able to control your actions, such as refraining from drinking alcohol or using drugs. You must also be able to control your emotions during these moments. You cannot let yourself lash out at others because you aren’t able to get what you want. Like with courage, self-control is easier if you’re consistent. If you give yourself too much leniency and only act with self-control when it’s convenient for you, you’re going to find yourself giving into temptations.

You may have heard of the Serenity Prayer: “Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.” Wisdom can come in so many different ways that are each beneficial in their own way. Wisdom, in this sense, is helpful in recovery because there are so many things that are out of your control. The more time you focus on the things you have no power to change, the less time you’re spending transforming yourself.
