Women experience the world in a different way than men do and respond to the world in a different way than men do.  Women are twice as likely than men to develop post traumatic stress disorder due to the severity of what they are more likely than men to experience in life. Post traumatic stress disorder can lead to substance use disorders in women, who experience addiction more progressively and severely than men as well.

The female alcoholic or addict receives a particular shame and stigma for not meeting the responsibilities of motherhood, domestic partnership, or vocational responsibilities. On top of the expectations of everyday life, women are expected to simply accept the inevitabilities of their life when it comes to abuse, discrimination, violence, and trauma.

Treatment is a critical time in a woman’s life where for the first time she can process and cope with the grief she has accumulated over many years. Women have a remarkable and distinct strength which brings them out of the deep well dug by addiction and into the light of recovery. When a woman can apply her resiliency to recovery, her life becomes a revolutionary example set to other women around the world.
