When the Loss Feels Too Great

Loss can mean many things. Sometimes the pain comes from the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the ending of a relationship. Whatever the cause of the loss is, no matter how big or how small, the pain is just as real. For someone who has experienced addiction in their life, the pain from a significant loss can create a tendency to relapse. Learning to cope with that loss effectively is a critical part of long-term recovery success.

First, the loss must be acknowledged. Recognize the source of the loss. If the pain comes from the loss of a close friendship, remind yourself of all the good times. This process can be painful, but it is necessary.  Appreciate the memories and cherish them.

Next, take action. Throw yourself into a hobby and keep yourself busy. Activities that require your focused attention will keep your mind busy. The expression “time heals all wounds” has never been more real, and time flies when you’re having fun, so keep yourself occupied. Hobbies that require physical activity are even more helpful as exercise offers numerous benefits for your wellbeing.

Lastly, learn to let go. You do not have to be a victim of your pain. Having dealt with addiction, we are indeed no stranger to pain and loss. Deciding to leave behind old habits and move on with sobriety and recovery means you are familiar with letting go, also. Pain is no different. In order to be free of pain and heartache, once you have acknowledged the loss, and taken action, it is time to let go. You do not need to carry the loss with you and add to your burdens. Letting go will lighten your spirit and allow you to find peace and freedom. You deserve to be free from old trauma and loss.
