Who Are You Without Your Illness?

There are times when we become so comfortable with our diagnoses that we don’t know who we are without them. They become something we fall back on. We are so used to our illness that we cannot separate ourselves from our illness. It’s important to remember that we are not our illness. We are our own person, distinguishable from our addiction, depression, anxiety, or any other illness or trauma we have. You are not your addiction. You are not your depression. You are not your anxiety. You are you — a great person with unique qualities and a big heart.

Although it may be comfortable and relax you to fall back on your illness, you have to learn to separate yourself from it. Don’t allow yourself to become complacent. You are your own person, not your illness or trauma. Don’t isolate yourself because you don’t know who you are. Get out there, socialize, and engage with others. You deserve a social life, even if you are plagued with something you don’t want.

You can also find yourself through exercise and healthy eating. Being active and taking care of your body will give you a sense of who you are. You must learn to become a healthy person who nurtures their body through recovery. Try not to identify yourself as someone who is sick. You can get better and manage your illness. It takes work, but it is so worth it.

It’s time to seek treatment for yourself after you’ve experienced symptoms of an illness or had a traumatic experience. You are not your illness. You are not your trauma. Try to find who you are by participating in new activities. You can do this on your own or with other people. Either way, get yourself out there. You can do this. You deserve this.
